Reflecting on Our Journey with Quupe
Lessons Learned and Insights Gained

As we look back on our journey with Quupe, we are filled with gratitude for the community that embraced our platform and helped us learn so much along the way. Quupe was born out of a vision to make sharing and renting everyday items easier and more accessible. While our path wasn’t without its challenges, it was also rich with invaluable lessons.
What We Learned
1. Behavioral Barriers to Renting
Renting items from others isn’t yet a natural first choice for most people. Our early adopters were not casual renters but rather businesses and freelancers—studios, rental shops, and creative professionals—who already had a foot in the door of lending.
2. The Importance of Existing Customer Bases
We saw that those with an existing clientele—like rental studios and niche shops—could seamlessly digitize their operations through Quupe. However, individuals or businesses without established customer relationships struggled to lend their items successfully.
3. Finding Our Market Niche
While we initially believed outdoor adventure gear would be our primary market, we discovered that our strongest niche was in film and photography equipment, particularly in Vancouver. This realization highlighted the importance of testing assumptions and remaining open to market signals.
4. Monetization Challenges
Despite the love for our platform, we couldn’t identify a scalable monetization model. Transactional fee models depend heavily on achieving high volume, which remained a challenge for us given the size of our market and audience reach.
Key Insights
• Customer Satisfaction: With 99% of reviews rating us 5/5 stars, it’s clear that our users appreciated the platform’s value and user experience.
• Reliability and Trust: Across 600 transactions, only six insurance claims were made, underscoring the trust and care within our community.
• Cost Efficiency: By leveraging Firebase, we kept cloud costs to an impressively low $100 per month, proving that impactful tech solutions don’t always have to come with a high price tag.
• Economic Impact: Our 500 lenders hosted $2.7M worth of inventory, which generated over $60K in revenue for 100 of them—a testament to the power of shared economies.
• Utilization Success: Items on Quupe were rented for over 3,000 days by 615 customers, reflecting significant usage and engagement.
Looking Ahead
What started as a school project, Quupe’s story is one of experimentation, community, and learning. While we couldn’t scale in the way we initially envisioned, the experience illuminated the complexities and opportunities within the sharing economy. We’re incredibly proud of the positive impact Quupe had on its users and the meaningful connections it fostered.
To our community, thank you for being part of this journey. The lessons we’ve gained will continue to shape future endeavors—and we hope our story inspires others to innovate, adapt, and build with purpose.
Here’s to the journey,
The Quupe Team
